LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA — FC Barcelona's captains for the 2023/24 season have been made official. This year, the homor will go to Sergi Roberto, Marc ter Stegen, Ronald Araujo, and Frenkie de Jong, in that order. The captains were determined by a vote held by the players here in Los Angeles.
Thus, Sergi Roberto becomes Barça's first captain, following two seasons as the team's third captain, a distinction he held since the departure of Leo Messi in 2021. The first two captains since then were Sergio Busquets and Gerard Piqué.
Last November, when Piqué retired, Sergi Roberto became the second captain for the remainder of the season, and now, with the recent departure of Sergio, the FC Barcelona number 20 moves to the top of the list.
This chain reaction has also allowed Ter Stegen to move up to second captain. He became the team's fourth captain after Piqué's retirement.
Araujo and De Jong, into the fold
Additionally, Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong become Barça captains for the first time, taking over the third and fourth slots that became available due to the aforementioned departures, as well as that of Jordi Alba. Interestingly, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba are once again teammates with Leo Messi, now at Inter Miami.
