Minutes before FC Barcelona’s official presentation of Eric Abidal as the new technical secretary, the Club’s Vice President, Jordi Mestre, appeared before the media to explain Barça’s perspective of the situation surrounding Antoine Griezmann. Here are the highlights of what he had to say:
On Griezmann’s decision to stay at Atlético Madrid:
“As a Club, we respect any player’s decision to decide their own future. We had officially informed Atlético Madrid of our interest in the player. Barça wants players who are committed and determined to triumph here, above and beyond any other circumstance."
On the Club’s feelings about the situation:
“That said, we’re very sorry and we regret that there are members and fans who may have felt disappointed by the way the final decision played out.”
On the involvement of Gerard Piqué:
“The President spoke to Gerard Piqué to tell him that his involvement had generated surprise and unease at the Club and among many Barça fans. We will speak about it internally with Gerard Piqué and Samuel Umtiti when they come back following the World Cup. We will make no further public statements regarding this issue. Our priority now is to keep working to have a team that continues aspiring to win every title possible.”
