Saturday was no ordinary preseason friendly for Luis Suárez. It was the first time he had faced Liverpool since he left the club for Barcelona, and although the game was played at Wembley rather than Anfield, it was Reds supporters that were naturally the majority in the stadium and they offered him a warm ovation when he left the field with 15 minutes to go.
There was also a hearty reaction from the Liverpool supporters when their former star’s name was read out on the PA system before kick-off.
“I have always felt the affection that the Liverpool fans feel for me” Suárez told Barça TV after the game. “The respect they show for me means I did things well there and made my mark.”
He admitted that it hurt to lose by such a heavy margin, and he was also disappointed to fail to find the target like he had done against Leicester midweek, but “it was a day of mixed emotions after having met up with so many former team-mates.”
