FC Barcelona’s record European win, by the numbers

FC Barcelona could not have gotten off to a better start to the 2016/17 Champions League, after a 7-0 win over Celtic at the Camp Nou on Wednesday.

The victory was the biggest in the club’s history in the competition, and also saw the return of the front three to devastating effect. Below are the standout stats and facts from the game:

• Celtic must be sick of the site of Barça, as the 7-0 defeat surpasses the 6-1 loss they suffered at the Camp Nou in 2013 as their biggest ever continental defeat.

• Ter Stegen, the penalty specialist: the German stopper has faced four penalties in the Champions League and has saved three of them, only Antoine Griezmann has scored past him from the spot.

• 759 to 258: Barça completed just over 500 passes more than their opponents, with an 88 per cent success rate.

• Messi’s first goal was his quickest ever in the competition, getting off the mark after just three minutes. It was also his fastest brace when he scored a second after 27 minutes.

• With his hat-trick, Messi becomes the player with the most ever hat-tricks in the Champions League (6).

• Iniesta scored with a fine volley in the second half, and it was his first goal in the competition since he scored against the same opponent four years ago.

• Neymar showed his unselfish side once again on Tuesday, setting up four goals. He is the first player to do so since Zlatan Ibrahimovic (2012). The Brazilian also got on the scoresheet with a superb free-kick.

• Andre Gomes had a near faultless game in midfield, completing 94 per cent of his passes playing in three different positions (left centre-midfielder, right centre-midfield and centre-midfield).

• With his latest two goals, Luis Suarez has six to his name in the five matches so far this season. The Uruguayan has three in the league, two in the Champions and one in the Spanish Super Cup.

• Luis Enrique substituted Sergio Busquets for the second time this campaign, after the midfielder had played every minute of the season so far bar 15 against Sevilla in the Super Cup.
