FC Barcelona will once again be facing Boca Juniors in the traditional season opener at the Camp Nou, the Joan Gamper Trophy. This will be the sixth time that the Argentinian giants have featured at the event, equalling the record held by PSV Eindhoven (excluding ourselves, of course, who always appear!).
The last two visits by Boca Juniors in 2003 and 2008 both saw the home side come from behind to win the match. In 2003, shortly after Frank Rijkaard had taken over at the club and with the legendary Carlos Tévez back at Boca 15 after 15 years in Europe, the visitors took the lead but Gerard López levelled and Barça went on to win on penalties.
Five years later, Boca were back, with Pep Guardiola now in charge at the Camp Nou. Viatri opened the scoring for the guests with just a quarter of an hour to go, but goals in injury time from Carles Puyol and Samuel Eto’o swung things around in a dramatic finale.
