The Champions League is over for the 2016/17 season. At least it is as far as FC Barcelona’s involvement is concerned after the team battled hard but failed to break down a solid Juventus unit that was always in the driving seat after winning the first leg 3-0.
But although the road to Cardiff went no further than the quarter finals, there are plenty of reasons to look back with pride on this year’s European adventure. The following stats are testimony of that:
- Leo Messi is still the top scorer in the competition, with eleven goals. And although he will have no more chances to build on his tally, he’s still on fine course to stay in front through to the end. His two main challengers, Cavani and Lewandowski, both with eight goals, are also out of the tournament.
- Meanwhile, it’s still Neymar Jr leading the way in assists, with eight. Once again, his main chaser, Ousmane Dembelé of Borussia Dortmund (six), is also not among the four semi-finalists.
- Neymar Jr also leads the way in completed dribbles in this season’s edition with an immense 48, a monstrous 17 more than the self-same Dembelé with 31. Leo Messi is tied in third place on 28 with Monaco’s Thomas Lemar, who is of course still involved in the competition.
- Luis Enrique has coached the team through three Champions League campaigns without losing a single game at the Camp Nou. In fact, the 0-0 result on Wednesday brought an end to an amazing run of 15 straight wins for FCB on home turf.
- Barça’s 65.1% average possession is only topped by Bayern Munich’s 65.8%. The Bavarians also lead the way in completed passes with 6,366, but the Catalans are second in that category with 5,778.
- Samuel Umtiti is tied with Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos for the best pass completion rate of 92.7%, and Gerard Piqué is close behind with 90.8%.
- FC Barcelona are exiting the competition after scoring 26 goals in ten games. The men on target were Messi (11), Neymar Jr (4), Arda Turan (4), Luis Suárez (3), Sergi Roberto (1), Andrés Iniesta (1) and Piqué (1), as well as one own goal from Kurzawa of PSG.
- Leo Messi, Luis Suárez and Ter Stegen were all on for 810 minutes of the campaign (nine games each). The next most used players by Luis Enrique were Neymar Jr (797) and Umtiti (720).
