Leo Messi reached another spectacular landmark after scoring his 500th official FC Barcelona goal against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The Argentine has broken numerous records in his time with the club, but his latest feat will likely be the hardest for any other player to conquer. With his two goals against Real Madrid, Messi once again showed his lethal nature in front of goal, racking up his fifth century of strikes en route to an exhilarating 3-2 win.
Unstoppable in front of goal
Leo Messi could not have chosen a better setting to reach his latest landmark than at the home of Barça’s eternal rivals, Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu. What makes the record even more spectacular is the fact that he has managed it in just 577 games, a ratio which equates to 0.86 goals per game.
His goals have been spread generously across all the competitions he has played in: 341 in the league, 94 in the Champions League, 43 in the Copa del Rey, 12 in the Spanish Super Cup, five in the Club World Cup and three in the European Super Cup.
This season, the Argentine star has scored 47 goals, and has already surpassed his tally of 41 from last season. That now makes it nine straight seasons in which he has scored 40 or more goals. And with his two goals tonight, he has struck 14 times against Madrid at the Bernabéu.
