Against Las Palmas on Sunday, Neymar Jr was able to celebrate his first away hat-trick in an FC Barcelona shirt. And they were three vitally important goals too, for they have kept his team in contention for a third consecutive Liga title.
The Brazilian has now scored 104 goals for the team that he joined from Santos in the summer of 2013, nineteen of those this season. His best year in terms of goals was 2014/15, when he netted a fabulous 39 times.
He’d scored three hat-tricks before, but they were all at the Camp Nou. The first was in his first season, when he got half of the goals in a 6-1 drubbing of Celtic in the Champions League. It was in another six-goal spree, against Granada the season after, that he again took home the match ball, and he repeated the feat earlier this very season in the 5-2 win against Rayo Vallecano.
This was actually the first hat-trick that any Barça player has scored on the road this term. The last player to do so was Luis Suárez on the very last day of last season, in the 3-0 win that clinched the second league championship of the Luis Enrique era.
