Ernesto Valverde’s Barça side continue to reach new heights this season. The blaugranes' 2-1 win over Alavés now means they are still unbeaten in La Liga this season after 21 matches, equalling the best ever unbeaten start to a league campaign held by Pep Guardiola’s Barça side from the 2009/10 season whose run came to an end in the 22nd round of fixtures when they lost 2-1 at the Vicente Calderón against Atlético Madrid.
Valverde’s men have matched that particular start to the season after beginning the campaign in 2017/18 with 18 wins and 3 draws, scoring 59 goals and conceding just 10. The next round of league fixtures sees Barça travel to Espanyol in the Catalan derby where they could set a new record for an unbeaten start to a season.
The best ever unbeaten run in La Liga for Barça (not starting at the beginning of the season) is no less than 31 matches without defeat, set in the 2010/11 season. Pep Guardiola’s went from week 3 in the campaign to week 33 without defeat. The overall record in the league is held by the 1979/80 Real Sociedad team who went 32 games without losing.
