Sustainability is one of the pillars of the 2026 FC Barcelona Strategic Plan, in various areas: finance, governance, sport, social and environmental. In line with this strategy, the Club is working daily to promote sustainable development in all areas, an example of which comes on Saturday 10 October with the remote Ordinary General Assembly which will be carbon neutral for the first time in Barça history.
From the Club, in its daily activities, basic criteria have been agreed and defined in order to move towards greater sustainability. These are the optimisation and saving of resources, via the efficient use of materials, energy and water consumption, the accurate and responsible use of resources, achieving a reduction in waste and the recycling of materials whenever possible. As such, ahead of the Ordinary General Assembly, the aim has been to apply a series of initiatives to make the event carbon neutral, reducing the emission of greenhouse gases related to the event as much as possible as well as measuring them.
To measure the emissions from the day, it is necessary to calculate the carbon footprints from all the related activities. The areas in which emissions need to be measured are: transport for those taking part in the Ordinary General Assembly – technical assistance, organisers and speakers – the electricity used during the day and the impact of catering, including transport and waste produced. Also included is the proportional impact of materials used for the organisation of the event such as the documentation presented and electronic devices.
In the case of the footprint created by transport, the Club will carry out a brief anonymous survey amongst all the people taking part in the Ordinary General Assembly in which they will be asked where they have travelled from, and via which form of transport. Once this information has been collected, an independent specialist in the area will calculate the CO2 emissions and subsequently they will be compensated for.
FC Barcelona’s sustainable reputation
Since the creation of the Sustainability Area at the beginning of the current mandate in November 2021, the Club has developed environmental policies that have positioned on a local and international scale.
FC Barcelona has always prioritised external verification of its environmental policies through prestigious, independent certification and data audits, such as the case of the BLM business via ‘Estat de la Informació No Financera’ (EINF).
Amongst the certificates obtained, Biosphere stands out as a standard that requires three new yearly challenges to be maintained. Also, BREEAM certification, awarded during the construction phase of the Espai Barça, which is aiming to become a role model in sustainability. The sum of all these aspects strengthens FC Barcelona’s reputation for sustainability.
