San Mamés, Bilbao is the venue on Saturday at 6pm CEST for what could be a historic day for the FC Barcelona women's football team. The stadium known as the Cathedral is set to be flooded with blaugrana supporters willing their team to victory in the UEFA Women's Champions League Final.

Barça are chasing a second European crown in a row, and the third in total, which would be a wonderful climax to a season in which they have won the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa de la Reina, and are already confirmed as the runaway champions of the Liga F, in which they haven't lost a single game.

But they are up against Olympique Lyon. A formidable opponent. The French side have won this competition far more times then anyone else. And this is the third time in five years that they have been Barça's opponents in the final, and on both previous occasions they not only won, but did so surprisingly comfortably.

Hopefully now that Barça are more mature and more experienced than ever, Saturday will be the day that they get to set that record straight.

Near-perfect journey

Jonatan Giráldez's side marched through the group stage of the UWCL with wins in every game except the last, which they drew. They then defeated Norwegian side Brann fairly comfortably in the quarter finals.

But the semi-finals were a reminder that things are a lot more difficult against Europe's elite teams. Chelsea won the first leg at Montjuïc and it began to look like this season's European journey was over. But no. A remarkable performance at Stamford Bridge turned the whole thing around, and Barça go into the final for the fourth time in a row.

Lyon strong as ever

Olympique's journey has also mainly consisted of confident victories, but they too have had their blips. They were held to two draws in the group stage, and although they they got past Benfica with relative ease in the quarters, things were a lot harder against fellow French side PSG in the semis.

They got through that titanic battle and are now the final hurdle in Barça's race to win all four major trophies in the same season, something that has never been done before.
