Pau Cubarsí, a record breaking centre half

After being included in the starting XI for game against Paris Saint-Germain in the Parc des Princes, Pau Cubarsí has become the youngest defender ever to start in the quarter-finals of the Champions League aged just 17 years and 79 days. Against Napoli he became the youngest ever Barça defender to start in the competition and now he adds another record to his ever growing list. 

Before Wednesday's game in Paris, the record was held by Russian Georgiy Shchennikov who appeared at the same stage of the Champions League for CSKA Moscow against Internazionale aged 18 years and 338 days. The third youngest ever was former Real Madrid defender Raphaël Varane who started a game against APOEL Nicosia in the last eight aged 18 years and 245 days in 2012.

Prior to Cubarsí, the youngest blaugrana defender to appear in the last right was none other than Carles Puyol who was 21 years and 358 days old when he faced Chelsea in 2000. At 22 years and 56 days Gerard Piqué faced Bayern Munich in 2009 followed by Sergi Barjuan (23 years and 63 days) against PSG in 1995 and Marc Bartra (23 years and 84 days) in 2014 against Atlético Madrid.
