In his first press conference since his announcement that he would be leaving his post as Barça coach on 30 June, Xavi Hernández reflected on the last few days. "Unity is important. It is not an easy time but we Barça and the fans to be united. I would like to highlight the reaction of the fans and the dressing room following my announcement. The shows of affection I have received have been amazing," said the Barça coach ahead of Wednesday's meeting with Osasuna in La Liga.
"I have been surprised by the messages, the calls...during the days a lot of my players have come to speak to me and many were emotional. I have felt that human quality," continued Xavi before adding: "My announcement was designed to help the team grow. so that we can all take a step forward."
What Xavi is hoping for now is a release of tension. "The reaction of the players should be what it needs to be on the field because we depend on them becoming inspired. There is a lot at stake, do our best in the league and compete in the Champions League. I am still excited, I feel free. I will give a bit extra so it works," he reasoned.
Aside from commenting on his position as coach, Xavi also looked ahead to Wednesday's game at home in the Estadi Olímpic. "Osasuna are rock solid defensively, they play direct football and work well together. It will be tough because they are a team with great spirit," he said in analysing Jagoba Arrasate's team.
On the team's long injury list, Xavi looked ahead to players returning. "Christensen is making an amazing effort and he should be available tomorrow," he revealed despite the Dane's physical problems. Iñigo Martínez should be back for the Alavés game according to coach with goalkeeper Marc ter Stegen looking at the Granada fixture for his comeback.
