Plaça Sant Jaume turns blaugrana in honour of the European champions

More than 1,500 fans gathered early on Sunday evening in Plaça Sant Jaume to join the UEFA Women’s Champions League winners at an institutional reception at the Catalan government building (Palau de la Generalitat) and Barcelona City Hall. The players, as well as Jonatan Giráldez and the rest of the coaching staff, plus president Laporta and members of his board were all smiles as songs, speeches and shows of affection and pride flooded the square.

It was an epic moment, with the players appearing on the balcony as used to happen in the old days in a repeat of scenes that have not been witnessed in the famous square for two decades.

The Generalitat was represented by its president, Pere Aragonès, the councillor to the president, Laura Vilagrà, and the secretary general for sport and physical activity, Anna Caula, who met them at the entrance to the building and led them to the Pati Gòtic for the official reception.

The entourage then crossed the street to be met by the mayor Ada Colau, joined by her deputy for ecology, planning, infrastructure and mobility, Janet Sanz, and the councillor for sports, David Escudé, where the venue for the second reception was the Saló de Cent. The European champions were honoured by a number of other members of the city council at an event that went on for almost two hours.
