The charity match between Barça and Manchester City, to raise funds for ALS research on August 24, will be the third time that Pep Guardiola has returned to Camp Nou as a visiting coach. His previous two visits were with Bayern Munich and with his current club, both in the Champions League and both ending in big wins for the Catalans.
Previous visits
Guardiola’s visit as Bayern manager was in 2015 for the semi-finals against a Barça side coached by Luis Enrique. The 3-0 win included the famous Leo Messi goal that left defender Jérome Boateng on the floor.
He was back later that very same year, this time as City boss in the group stages. Messi was the hero once again as he netted a hat-trick in a 4-0 win for Barça.
As Barça manager
Guardiola may have lost on both of his visits to Camp Nou, but he certainly knows what it is like to win there. He was Barça coach for 118 home fixtures, winning 97 of them, drawing 14 and losing just seven. That equates to a massive 82% success rate.
The Catalan coach racked up an extraordinary 14 different trophies in his time at the club, including the famous sextuple of 2009.
His last game as Barça coach at Camp Nou was on 5 May 2012, a 4-0 with in the derby against Espanyol. The image that will always remain from that day is of the whole team giving the departing manager a guard of honour followed by the ‘bumps’ in signal of the club’s eternal gratitude for all he achieved here.
