Thursday 28 April sees the premiere on Barça TV+ of 'The Beginning of a New Era,' a documentary about the Women's Champions League quarter final match which took place between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid on 30 March. It is a game that has now gone down in history at Barça and in women's football as it was played in front of 91,553 fans, at that time a record for a women's game.
The programmes is 23 minutes long and centre around three separate threads. One is centre around Melanie Serrano, the player who has made most appearances in the Barça shirt for the women's first team, her wife and their two children. The documentary tracks Melanie, in her 18th season at FC Barcelona, as she gets ready for the game with her family for a match she describes as "very important."
It was also a special day for three young Barça players: Bruna Vilamala, Jana Fernández and Cata Coll. The three players were injured for the visit of Real Madrid but they followed the game from the stands and their experience cheering on their teammates is caught by the cameras. Finally, 'The Beginning of a New Era' also attempts to portray the experience of the Abel family who attend the game that day. The programme takes a look at how the youngsters in particular enjoy their first game at Camp Nou, one that would go down in history and become a global reference point in women's football.
The documentary follows the excitement that greeted the team on their arrival at Camp Nou before the game as well the atmosphere following the historic fixture, especially focusing on the three players Jana, Cata and Bruna who all wish to experience something similar at Camp Nou but this time out there on the field.
