Copa del Rey number 31, already known as ‘the first cup of a new era’, is in the Barça Museum. The trophy won last Saturday against Athletic Club (0-4) in Seville was presented by President Joan Laporta, First Vice President Rafa Yuste, First Team Coach Ronald Koeman and the four captains, Leo Messi, Sergio Busquets, Gerard Piqué and Sergi Roberto.
With this unprecedented gesture, the club wanted to highlight the importance of a Cup that means the first title of the season for the football team and also the first of the second term of President Joan Laporta and the new Board of Directors. A title that has given Barça's players the enthusiasm and an injection of confidence to face the final stretch of the season. The league is still in play and the possibility of a double remains.
The first Cup and the last
The players signed a shirt which was placed alongside the trophy, and Laporta, Yuste and Koeman put the first Spanish Cup (the present Copa del Rey, which was won in 1910), and Pepe Rodríguez's shirt next to it. The players heard the story of that trophy from 110 years ago, won in a final against Espanol de Madrid (3-2), from Jordi Penas, director of the Museum. The family of the Galician striker and Barça captain, who scored in that game, donated his shirt in 2009. At 110 years old, it's the oldest known shirt at a football club.
The Museum is currently closed to the public during the week (except arranged visits) due to the pandemic, though fans can visit it at weekends (Friday afternoon, Saturday all day and Sunday morning) and see both trophies. For those fans from all over the world who cannot physically travel, they can watch the Camp Nou Live Stream Tour, an interactive and live virtual tour that lasts for 45 minutes and for which tickets can be purchased from the club's website.
