Leo Messi has added another award to his trophy cabinet. This time, it's the Pichichi for the 2019/20 season, which is handed out every year at the MARCA Football Awards gala. On this occasion, and due to the pandemic, the ceremony took place virtually.
It's an award that is received by the top scorer in the league season, and the Argentine has won it for the seventh time in his career, after scoring 25 goals in 33 games.
It's also an historic award this time, because Messi has now moved ahead of Telmo Zarra, who had six Pichichi awards to his name.
It's the fourth Pichichi in a row for Barça’s No.10, equalling the feat of Mexican striker, Hugo Sánchez, who won it in 1984/85 (with Atlético Madrid) and in the following three seasons with Real Madrid (1985/86, 1986/87 and 1987/88).
The presentation of the Pichichi trophy was carried out by the director of MARCA, Juan Ignacio Gallardo, who also gave him a frame with the cover of the newspaper after the tribute that Messi paid to Maradona.
'I never imagined that I would achieve so many Pichichis'
Leo Messi wanted to give thanks for the award, and commented that "I never imagined that I would achieve so many Pichichi trophies and could surpass Zarra; it is a great joy."
Messi also made some statements to Luis Fernando Rojo, editor of MARCA. "We will fight until the end to win everything. We didn't start well, but little by little we are growing. Now the important thing is to get a streak of several consecutive victories to be able to move up the table." He also wished that everything soon returned to normal. "Hopefully we can see our fans again soon."
