Sergiño Dest has been named in the squad for the United States national team’s friendlies against Wales next 12 November and against Panama on 16 November. The news comes on the player’s 20th birthday and means the right back will become the first person to play for Team USA as a current FC Barcelona player, having made the move to the Camp Nou on October 1. Also in the squad is Barça B player Konrad de la Fuente.
Just three days after arriving, Dest made his official debut at home to Sevilla, albeit on the left hand side of defence – the opposite side to usual as he explains in an interview with the US media.
On October 24, he became the first ever American citizen to play in El Clásico, describing the experience as a “dream come true.”
The teenage sensation (at least until his birthday today) is one of the 20 players shortlisted for the Golden Boy award, together with his new team-mate Ansu Fati.
Although born and raised in the Netherlands, Dest’s father is a US citizen and that is the country he has opted to represent at international level. He already has three caps with the USMNT, starting with a friendly against Mexico in September of last year.
