In the 1944-45 season Barça claimed the second league title in the Club's history, the first had been won in the inaugural championship in 1929. With legendary former Barça player Josep Samitier as coach and César and Escolà scoring the goals, the blaugranes proved formidable opponents during the campaign with innovative tactical changes such as the 3-2-5 formation.
FC Barcelona's main rivals for the league title were Real Madrid but a 5-0 win at Les Corts in March of 1945 against the club from the capital gave the blaugranes the advantage. On 13 May a 5-2 win in the second to last game of the season at home to Athletic Club sealed the league championship for a team in the words of striker César "without big stars but with youth and experiences that played with joy and excitement. We were a group of real friends."
