Eleven years ago, on May 6, 2009, Andrés Iniesta scored one of his most famous goals. The location was Stamford Bridge, London. The opponents were Chelsea. The time was 93 minutes deep into the game. It was the Champions League semifinal second leg between the familiar rivals, and a ticket to the final at the Estadio Olímpico in Rome was at stake.
Barça, coached by Pep Guardiola, had drawn 0-0 with the Premier League giants in the first leg at the Camp Nou. Between the two ties, they had a visit to the Santiago Bernabéu on which to focus, meeting Real Madrid in El Clásico. A 2-6 spectacle gave them momentum, and bragging rights. Four days later, they made their way to London.
An epic finale
The Blaugrana experienced a tricky start to the game. Chelsea's Michael Essien opened the scoring with a strike just 9 minutes in, putting Barça on the back foot. The sending off of Eric Abidal in the second half added to the challenge, but there was no giving up for Guardiola's men -who needed to score at least once to go through on away goals. The breakthrough came right at the death, as a cross in from Dani Alves found its way to Leo Messi off a series of ricochets. The Argentine set up Iniesta on the edge of the box, and the No.8 put his foot through the ball to send it into the net -and Barça into the final.
The goal provided some iconic images, as Guardiola and José Manuel Pinto raced around the dugout, the suspended Carles Puyol celebrated in the stands and the travelling supporters erupted with a roar around the stunned Stamford Bridge.
29 trophies since Iniesta's goal
The goal at Stamford Bridge was a landmark moment for a golden era at Barça. The club won their first treble that season, and since Iniesta's shot hit the target the club have won 29 trophies in 11 seasons (including their second treble, in 2015). Eleven years on, the injury time winner from a Barça legend remains a Barça classic.
