Lewandowski on a roll

Lewandowski on a roll

Polish striker has 99 goals for the club, 40 of them this season

Robert Lewandowski is out of this world. This is turning out to be his best season yet at Barça, not bad at all for someone who is 36 years young. And they're not any old goals, with his brace last night contributing to a stunning 4-0 defeat of Borussia Dortmund, further embedding his name into club history.

40 again

Lewy has scored 40 goals in his 45 games this season, almost one a game. That's nothing new for him. He scored 40+ in seven consecutive seasons at Bayern Munich (2015/16 to 2021/22). His best tally was 51 in 2019/2020, the German outfit's treble winning year. But he still has at least ten games to go this season, as many as 13 should Barça reach the Champions League final.

Nearly 100

Lewandowski has scored 99 competitive goals in a Barça shirt, and his 100th is surely not far off, maybe even against Leganés this coming Saturday. 99 is the same number that Pedro Rodríguez scored in his time at the club, and just five more will surpass José Antonio Zaldúa (1961-71) to move Lewandowski into the club's all-time top 20 goalscorers.

His two against BVB mean he now has 11 goals in this season's Champions League, just one behind competition leader, his team-mate Raphinha (12).

Precisely the right moment

The brace against Dortmund means the Pole has now scored 34 goals in Champions League knockout matches, equalling Karim Benzema in third place and now only surpassed by Cristiano Ronaldo (67) and Leo Messi (49).

Punishing old friends

Lewandowski has scored more goals than games he has played against his former club, Borussia Dortmund, 29 goals in 28 games, counting the games he played while at Bayern Munich. Wednesday was the first time he has scored against BVB in the Champions League.

All in all, some quite astounding stats from a player who will ultimately be remembered as one of the finest strikers ever to grace the game. The numbers prove it!
