FC Barcelona are playing in this Sunday's Spanish Super Cup Final at 8pm CET. The opponent, either Real Madrid or Mallorca, has yet to be decided, but the Catalans are there for sure after defeating Athletic Club 2-0 in Wednesday's semi-final.
Barça already hold the record number of titles in this competition, having won 14 of the 40 editions played to date, and having appeared in the final 27 times.
First win 42 years ago
What was originally a preseason curtain raiser played home and away between the league and cup champions of the previous year was first contested in 1982. Barça won the trophy at the second time of asking, in 1983, beating Athletic Club 3-2 on aggregate.
Three in a row
Under Pep Guardiola, Barça matched Real Madrid's feat of the 1980s by winning the trophy three times in a row, from 2009 to 2011. They beat Athletic Club in 2009, Sevilla in 2010 and then Real Madrid in 2011, taking their overall haul of wins up to ten.
Recent success
In the decade and a half since then, Barça have continued their love affair with the Super Cup, winning it a further four times. The most recent was in 2023, and the first for Barça under the new four-team format at a neutral venue.
That was an especially momentous occasion because it doubled as a Clásico, the eighth time the famous rivals had gone head-to-head. Barça won that game 3-1, but 12 months ago, the all-whites were victorious when the two teams met yet again.
Hansi Flick's mission is to extend Barça's Super Cup record to 15 wins, with Real Madrid currently on 13, and Athletic Club and Deportivo La Coruña next on the list with three wins each.
