FC Barcelona's highest goalscoring start... ever!

FC Barcelona's highest goalscoring start... ever!

Hansi Flick has watched his team score 55 goals in just 16 competitive matches

FC Barcelona is a team accustomed to scoring lots of goals. But this year has been something very special indeed. We're just 16 games into 2024/25 and the team has already notched up 55 goals. If it feels like Barça are scoring are scoring more goals than ever, you'd be right. Statistically this is the best season ever, even compared to the bygone era when teams typically played with five forwards in a 2-3-5 system and games were therefore much higher scoring.

It was 74 years ago, back in 1950/51, when Ferdinand Daucik led the team to 54 goals in its first 16 games, the previous all-time best. In third place comes the 1927/28 season, before La Liga had been founded and when Barça scored 54 goals in the 16 games of the Copa del Rey, some of those matches against some rather weak opponents. Which makes what we are currently witnessing all the more impressive.

Top at home and in Europe

Barça are currently the top scorers in La Liga with 40 goals, almost double the number scored by Real Madrid, who are second in the ranking with 21. Around Europe's biggest leagues, the only teams that come close to Barça are PSV, who have 37 in the Netherlands, and Sporting with 35 in Portugal.

The Catalans also come out top in the Champions League, with 15 goals followed by Borussia Dortmund with 13. Comparing both competitions, the team with the second most Champions League and domestic goals is Bayern Munich with 51.

Big wins

The best news of all is that the wins have been getting bigger and bigger. After starting the competitive season with three close 2-1 wins, Barça are now on a run of seven games scoring three or more goals, against Young Boys (5-0), Alavés (3-0), Sevilla (5-1), Bayern Munich (4-1), Real Madrid (4-0), Espanyol (3-1) and now Red Star Belgrade (5-2).

Another result like that would match Pep Guardiola's run of eight games in 2010, while the all-time record run of nine games scoring three or more was under Juan José Nogués in 1943. The teams that stand between Hansi Flick and the record are Real Sociedad at the Reale Arena and Brest at the Estadi Olímpic.
