The build-up to the derby at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys was an emotional one. The most poignant moment was the impeccably respected minute's silence in memory of the victims of the disaster caused by torrential rains this week in Valencia, and also in parts of Castilla la Mancha and Andalusia.
The whole of Spanish society is in mourning right now, and FC Barcelona also wished to do something in solidarity with the people affected by the tragedy. The first of a series of actions is an auction of the shirts that the players wore in the game to raise money for the people hit hardest by the catastrophe and which will be channelled to the right places by the Red Cross, Cáritas and the Valencia Food Bank.
Recognition for Aitana and Lamine Yamal
On a more cheerful note, the build-up also reserved some time for Aitana Bonmatí, who was heartily applauded by the whole stadium as she paraded what is her second consecutive Ballon d'Or.
There was also a moment for Lamine Yamal, who won the Kopa Trophy at the same ceremony, in his case for being voted the world's best footballer under the age of 23.
Lewandowski, October MVP
Lamine also did the honours by presenting his team-mate Robert Lewandowski with the La Liga Player of the Month award for October. All three monthly awards have gone to Barça players so far this season, with Raphinha and Lamine himself having picked up the earlier prizes.
Meanwhile, Pedri won the Best U23 Player for October, following on from Lamine Yamal in August, and Hansi Flick won Coach of the Month for the second time already. When it comes to individual awards, Barça are totally cleaning up in 2024/25!
