Robert Lewandowski top of Flick's class so far this season

The Pole begins the season in great form, proving so again against Athletic Club

You can't really ask much more from Barça as their competitive 24/25 season gets under way. Two LaLiga games, two wins and six points out of six. Many names stand out in Hansi Flick's new Barça side, but who seems to be top of the class so far is none other than Robert Lewandowski. The Pole began the season in the best possible fashion with a brace at the Mestalla stadium, and he has now scored the winning goal against Athletic Club after constantly threatening to score throughout the game.

Shooting boots well and truly on

Three goals in two games, with the real feeling he has his shooting boots on, because if it wasn't for hitting the woodwork twice or keeper Álex Padilla's efforts, he could have scored another. The centre forward being so on the ball is great news for Barça, but it shouldn't come as any surprise. Lewandowski has been and remains an outstanding goalscorer.

Over the last five years from 2019/20 season onwards for example, he has scored 155 goals across the Bundesliga and LaLiga, 26 more than both Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé, who are tied on 129, with Real Madrid's game against Valladolid still to come this matchday. Back in the here and now, Lewandowski seems to be spending more time where he is most dangerous, i.e. in the opposition's box, with three clearly offensive players behind him providing passes that he converts into goals and chances.

The Lewandowski that Flick wants

That's where the Hansi Flick factor comes back into play. Before the German coach was signed, it was common knowledge that Lewandowski had put up some superb stats under his charge. He had scored 83 goals in 71 games while they were together at Bayern. An outstanding ratio he is keeping up at Barça, albeit with a small sample size so far.

Flick spoke about the blaugrana number 9 during the post-match press conference after playing Athletic Club, assuring "I know him very well, I have worked with him, his physical condition is one hundred percent. He seeks out goals, he's a natural goalscorer. We always try to get the ball to him very high up the pitch, that's part of our game. His goal has given us the three points and the win”. Hansi Flick still has many pieces to fit into the puzzle, such as injured players like Araujo, Gavi, Ansu Fati and De Jong, along with Dani Olmo once registered, but Robert Lewandowski has fitted perfectly from day one. And long may it continue.
