Ter Stegen still on course for the Zamora

Ter Stegen kept another clean sheet on Sunday against Rayo, and that means he is still in contention to retain the Zamora trophy for the best goalkeeping record in La Liga. After conceding four times in Girona, it was starting to look very unlikely that the German would win the prize, but three clean sheets in a row mean that if he can avoid conceding against Sevilla at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán and Unai Simón does get beaten at Vallecas, then he will be honoured with the trophy.

None of Real Sociedad, Almeria or Rayo Vallecano were able to beat Ter Stegen, who isn't even eligible for the Zamora unless he plays one more game after he missed three months of football due to his back problems midway through the competition. 

In total, he has let in 26 goals in 27 games, a coefficient of 0.96 a game. If he keeps a clean sheet against Sevilla, that would shoot down to 0.92 and also mean he would have played the requisite 28 games to qualify for the award. His main rival in the hunt is Unai Simón of Athletic, whose own coefficient is 0.94. He didn't play this weekend but that trick won't do him any good on the final day. He would need to play at least 60 minutes against Rayo Vallecano and not concede a single goal, otherwise Ter Stegen would beat him (provided the Barça keeper also avoids conceding any goals).

Alex Remiro of Real Sociedad is also in the race, although he needs to keep a clean sheet on the final day and hope that both the Barça and Athletic goalkeepers both let in goals. The following stats show just how close it all is: 

• Unai Simón: 33 goals in 35 games. Coefficient 0.94
• Álex Remiro: 35 goals in 36 games. Coefficient 0.97
• Ter Stegen: 26 goals in 27 games. Coefficient 0.96

If Simón keeps a clean sheet in the final game, then that's the end of the story. Athletic's man will have a coefficient of 0.91 that nobody could beat. He'd thus win the award. If he concedes a goal, his rating drops to 0.94, and that opens up the door for the Barça stopper.

The best Ter Stegen could get is 0.92, if he gets a clean sheet against Sevilla. But if he too concedes a goal, then events at the Reale Arena come into play. Real Sociedad are playing Madrid, and Remiro could well end up leaving neither Simón nor Ter Stegen with a new addition to their mantelpiece.
