Ilkay Gündoğan against FC Barcelona

The blaugranes' latest signing has faced his new club on three separate occasions, with one game in particular a memorable one for the midfielder

Now that Ilkay Gündoğan's arrival at FC Barcelona on a two year deal with the option for a third has been confirmed, we can look back at the three occasions on which the German midfielder has played against the blaugranes - all of which came in a Manchester City shirt.

Three games and two goals against Barça

In this three meetings with the blaugranes, Gündoğan's record reads one win, one draw and one defeat. The first two meetings came in the Champions League group stage in the 2016/17 season. Gündoğan played 79 minutes of the encounter on Match Day three of the competition in which Manchester City went down to a 4-0 defeat at Spotify Camp Nou with Leo Messi scoring a hat-trick and Neymar grabbing the other.

On Match Day four at the Etihad Stadium Gündoğan played an important role in the win for the Manchester club. Barça's latest signing scored twice in the game, the first to cancel out Leo Messi's opening strike, and a second to make it 3-1 after team mate Kevin de Bruyne had put City ahead.

A final, emotional meeting

The most recent meeting between Gündoğan and FC Barcelona came at the start of last season when Manchester City came to the Spotify Camp Nou for a friendly to raise money for the fight against ALS and to play tribute to Juan Carlos Unzué. The results was a 3-3 draw with Gündoğan coming on in the 64th minute of the encounter to replace Phil Foden.

Barça's new midfielder knows what it is like to come up against the blaugranes and from 2023/24, the German international will be wearing those colours himself in Xavi Hernández's team.
