Sergio Busquets, Sergi Roberto, Eric Garcia and Gavi will all be chasing UEFA Nations League glory on Sunday at the San Siro (20.45pm CEST). But it won’t be easy. Up against them are world champions France.
This is only the second edition of this tournament, after Portugal won the inaugural edition in 2019.
Busquets looking for another medal
"We’ll have a great game", promised Luis Enrique in his pregame conference. After their impressive victory against Euro 2020 winners Italy in the semi-finals, Spain have every reason to believe they can do win their first major title since they won Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine.
Sergio Busquets was in the squad nine years ago, but a senior international title will be something new for Sergi Roberto, Eric Garcia and Gavi, the latter having won his first ever cap in Wednesday’s semi-final.
"Winning a trophy for the national team is always nice” said Busquets in an interview with Sport newspaper. “I know what it’s like to win the Euros and the World Cup, but this is a new title and we want to win it.”
Familiar foes
There will be planet of familiar faces standing between La Roja and the trophy. Antoine Griezmann and Lucas Digne both have a past at FC Barcelona, while the likes of Benzema and Koundé are well known to everyone in LaLiga
This is the second time that France and Spain have played in a major final. In 1984, France won 2-0 to win the European Championship. Their last meeting at a major tournament was at the Euro 2012 quarter finals, which also ended 2-0, but this time to Spain.
