Manchester City, FC Barcelona’s rival in the knock out round of the Champions League, defeated Liverpool (2-1) this Thursday. The thrilling showdown between the two in-form teams saw the Citizens assert control after the starting whistle. Liverpool, however, were up to the task and managed to net the opener on 24 minutes thanks to a strike from Coutinho.
Manchester City launched into pursuit of the equaliser, and they got it six minutes after Liverpool’s go-ahead goal. Kompany headed home a corner to bring the home team level on 30 minutes. The Manuel Pellegrini's men took the lead just before the break when Negredo finished off a lightning-quick counterattack led by Navas.
The scoreline didn’t move in the second half, but not because of a lack of chances. Liverpool came close to equalising on multiple occasions, but they were unlucky in front of goal. With this result Manchester City climb to second place in the table, on 38 points, one point adrift of Arsenal.
