FC Barcelona will get the chance to defend the Catalonia Cup title. The youngsters of Barça B and Juvenil A, plus Isaac Cuenca, played a serious game on the pitch of Montilivi. The intensity of their approach allowed them to best Girona in the second semi-final, and now they will face Espanyol in the final - a rematch from last year’s final.
In this Tuesday’s game, Cuenca returned to competitive play after a year-long absence, and he did so by scoring a goal. For a while it seemed as though the game would end in a draw, but a header from Ilie, which took a deflection from z defender, ended up in the back of the net.
Babunski scores the opener
The team led by Eusebio Sacristán kicked off the match with the clear intention of setting the pace of the game. Babunski was the first to warn Girona, on the six minute mark, with a shot from inside the area. A few minutes later the Macedonian scored the opener after an assist from Dongou.
Girona scored the equalizer before the break thanks to a shot from Chando.
Cuenca is rewarded
After the break, Cuenca, who returned to competitive play after nearly a year, scored the go-ahead goal from the penalty spot after Espinosa was brought down in the area. Girona weren’t down and out, however, as Chando got his brace and brought his team level once again.
With 12 minutes left on the clock, Ilie got on the end of a corner kick and headed the ball into the back of the net to send FC Barcelona through to the final of the Catalonia Cup.
