After several years tracking one of the most prolific forwards in Spain, Barça managed to sign David Villa in the summer of 2010. The Asturian went to South Africa to play in a World Cup he would go on to win, already knowing that on return, he would be wearing the blaugrana jersey. His impact was immediate. "El Guaje" started doing what he did best—scoring goals. In total, he netted 48 in 119 matches. One of his most memorable came in the 2011 Champions League final at Wembley, where he sealed Barça’s 3-1 victory.
During his first season at the club (2010-2011), Villa played almost every match, forming a dream attacking trio alongside Messi and Pedro. However, in December 2011, while competing in the Club World Cup, he suffered a tibia injury that sidelined him for the rest of the season. Villa returned the year after to contribute to the "100-point Liga" under Tito Vilanova.
At the end of that triumphant season, Villa signed for Atlético Madrid, where won La Liga again, before crossing the Atlantic to join New York City FC. His travels also took him to Melbourne City in Australia and Vissel Kobe in Japan before retiring in 2020 at the age of 38.
