MATCH DAY-36
More than a midfielder

If Barça is more than a club, then Xavi Hernández is more than a midfielder. After coming through the youth set up at La Masia, he made his debut in 1998 against Mallorca. Xavi went to spend 17 years with the Barça first team and another four in Qatar with Al-Sadd before hanging up his boots.

Gifted with tremendous technique and vision, Xavi Hernández is without doubt one of the best midfielders ever to play football. After making his way through the youth teams following his arrival as an U14, Xavi finally made his debut for the first team in coach Louis van Gaal's second season in charge, in August 1998 in a Spanish Super Cup game against Mallorca. The midfielder marked the occasion by scoring at the beginning of his first of what would be 17 seasons as part of the first team.

In that time he won eight La Liga titles and four Champions League titles amongst many other honours. With the national team he was part of the European Championship winning sides of 2008 and 2012, and the World Cup winning team of 2010. In his final season at Barça he claimed the treble of Copa del Rey, league and Champions League and his 767 games for the club leave him second on the all time list of appearances behind Leo Messi. His final four seasons as a professional were spent in Qatar with Al-Sadd.
