Defender who started out in the youth ranks at Valladolid and arrived at Barça after four great seasons at Atlético Madrid. Juan Carlos was one of the decisive players in the European Cup Final at Wembley and formed part of the so-called Dream Team that won four consecutive Ligas. He was very quick and was therefore nicknamed “the hare”, who played mostly as a left back, and was a tight marker. He was essential in his two first seasons at the club, but then faced stiff competition for a place with the arrival of Sergi Barjuán in the first team. Won la Liga in the three seasons that he wore the blaugrana colours. He later signed for Valencia and ended his career back at Valladolid. In 1998 he retired from professional football.

Full biography:

Arrived at the club from an Atlético Madrid that had won the cup in 1991. His speed and defensive tightness meant he slotted perfectly into Johan Cruyff’s elevens. A wing back with the speed to act as a winger in attack and who was a solid blocker of the left flank when called on to defend, he made his debut for Barça in a game at home to Zaragoza that ended 3-1. Formed part of the historic defence of the Wembley final alongside Ferrer, Nando and Koeman. His last game as a blaugrana was in May 1994, a 4-0 defeat of Sporting Gijón at the Camp Nou. After a season with less playing time for the team he left for Valencia where he stayed for just one season. Back at Valladolid, he played his last four seasons as a professional footballer.
