Patrik Andersson is one of the few Swedish players to have featured for Barça. He arrived at the age of 30 after becoming a European champion with Bayern Munich in 2001. Injuries were not kind to him and his was unable to display his full potential as a centre back in the 3 years that he wore the blaugrana colours. Andersson would end up retiring in his country, Sweden, in 2005 as a Malmö player.

Barça had no second thoughts about signing one of the best centre backs in Europe at the time in the summer of 2001. Patrik Andersson had just completed three great seasons with the all-conquering Bayern Munich, winning the Champions League in Milan against Valencia on penalties. In his first year as a blaugrana, with Carles Rexach on the bench, he competed for a place in the centre of defence with another new signing, Frenchman Philippe Christanval. The following year, with Van Gaal first, and with Antic after, the Swede barely played because of injuries. He suffered the same fate in his last season at Barça, 2003-04, under the orders of Frank Rijkaard. Injuries plagued his final years as a professional. Andersson put an end to his footballing days one year later after returning to his homeland to play for Malmö.
