An engineer by trade, Steinberg was some character. In November 1901, days after arriving in Barcelona, he tracked down Joan Gamper in search of a game football. He looked strong, bur rather too chubby to be a serious football, but it soon transpired that he was a genius at the game and had a formidable shot. He was also remarkably swift, and before and after games would also compete in athletics competitions, where the 100m was his speciality.
In 1902, he even took to coaching, and his simple soccer school can even be considered the first step towards the modern-day Masia. From 5 December 1902 to 6 November 1907, he sat on the club board, and from December 1905 to December 1906, he was president of the Catalan Association of Clubs, the forerunner to the modern-day federation, and was also a prominent driver of the Spanish Federation and the Referees Commission.
