FC Barcelona has once again renewed its dual Biosphere certification, which verifies that both the club and the museum develop their goods and services in line with a model that is responsible towards society and the environment. As has been the focus in recent years, the club continues to promote sustainable development in all areas of operation to improve standards while achieving and renewing some of the main benchmark certifications. These areas of action include the redevelopment of Spotify Camp Nou, with the associated circular economy project, as well as the design of Espai Barça and the museum.
As part of FC Barcelona’s firm commitment to sustainability, and for the third consecutive year, both the club and the museum have been recognized with this certification after continuing to report indicators related to topics such as climate change, energy from renewable sources, water conservation, biodiversity preservation, waste reduction, responsible consumption, sustainable infrastructure, sustainable tourist destinations, cultural heritage, economic and inclusive development, well-being, safety and health, promotion of inclusive and quality education, gender equality and female empowerment, reduction of inequalities, and decent work, among others.
The Biosphere certification is aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the United Nations' 2030 Agenda. It is granted by the Responsible Tourism Institute (ITR), an independent organization founded in 1995 with the aim of promoting sustainable development actions and programmes. The ITR was established with the support of UNESCO and is a founding member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), supported by the United Nations Foundation. Since 2017, Biosphere has become the first global sustainability certification system aligned with the 2030 Agenda, its 169 targets, and 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
To renew the certification, a minimum of three improvement actions need to be verified. In the case of FC Barcelona and its museum, these have included:
- Promotion of an internal awareness campaign to encourage responsible water use in both work and personal settings.
- Publication of a dedicated sustainability section on the club’s official website to inform about initiatives undertaken and reports produced.
- Implementation of innovative technology for people with hearing disabilities, translating sounds into visual alerts on any connected device.
- Offering museum visits for vulnerable groups.
- Introduction of "quiet hours" for visiting the museum and the Megastore.
Commitment to Sustainable Initiatives
Sustainability is one of the cornerstones of the 2026 Strategic Plan, understood across different areas: economic (non-financial), governance, sports, social, and environmental. With this vision in mind, the club continuously promotes sustainable initiatives, such as those being carried out in the redevelopment of Spotify Camp Nou and the associated circular economy project, as well as those integrated into the Espai Barça project, its design, and the museum. These initiatives are having a direct impact on the future stadium, including the reuse of concrete and steel from the old structure. They will also influence the completion of the Espai Barça project, affecting areas such as energy efficiency, water management, waste reduction, and biodiversity preservation.
All these sustainability policies are being implemented across all FC Barcelona facilities, from the Les Corts head offices to the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper training complex, ensuring that sustainability is a key element in the club’s day-to-day activities.
