FC Barcelona continues to promote sustainable initiatives and applies an environmental fee on tickets for the Barça Immersive Tour and the future Museum

The initiative is led by the Club’s Sustainability Area and was applied last Monday, 2 December, increasing the ticket price by €0.50 to help fund the Club’s ‘Net Zero’ ambitions

Sustainability is one of the three pillars of the 2021-2026 FC Barcelona Strategic Plan, seen from various areas: finance and government, sport, social and environment. In line with this approach, the Club is working to promote sustainable development in all its areas of activity. As part of this proposal, the Club continues to promote sustainable initiatives and last Monday, 2 December, an environmental fee of €0.50 was added to tickets for the Barça Immersive Tour and future Museum at Spotify Camp Nou to fund the Club’s ‘Net-Zero’ objectives.

Aligning to the Club’s strategic objectives, this initiative is headed up by the FC Barcelona Area of Sustainability who are working in conjunction with Artemeter, a company specialising in sustainability and carbon markets.

Environmental policies at FC Barcelona

The environmental fee will help fund FC Barcelona’s sustainability programs, which span four areas: energy, waste, water and biodiversity. With regards to energy, this area is based around energy consumption – electricity – which comes from 100% renewable sources, and that of corporate and sporting travel, in which use of means of transport with low environmental impact are prioritised. Along the same lines, one of the initiatives being carried both at the Ciutat Esportiva and the FC Barcelona facilities in Les Corts is the installation of electrical charging points for hybrid and electric vehicles.

As for waste, FC Barcelona is following the strategy of the 3R’s - Reduction, Reuse and Recycling -, together with the evaluation of unavoidable waste, working towards a target of zero waste by 2030. As such, it is worth pointing out in the redevelopment of Spotify Camp Nou, the first and second tier have been reused, bringing with it a saving in terms of new materials and energy used, and for the building of the third tier, 100% of the concrete available from the demolition of the old structure has been recycled and reused. This is an example of a circular economy of concrete that has never been seen before, and the two operations have brought about a 50% saving in terms of the carbon footprint.

In terms of water, saving measures have been applied in both bathrooms and in the dressing rooms at FC Barcelona’s facilities, and the necessary infrastructure to water pitches at the Ciutat Esportiva with regenerated water has also been put in place, creating a circular economic policy concerning water administration. Furthermore, amongst the different activities related to sustainability that will be implemented with the development of the Espai Barça, one that stands out is the collection of rainwater from the new roof that will cover Spotify Camp Nou.

Finally, relating to the topic of biodiversity, FC Barcelona have compiled two guides, one centred on all the different species living at Spotify Camp Nou, and another referring to the Ciutat Esportiva, where to preserve the biodiversity of the area, three different types of nest boxes have been installed for swifts, insect eating birds and birds of prey to aid their survival.
