Hansi Flick became the coach of FC Barcelona on 29 May 2024 as a replacement for Xavi Hernández, who had managed the team from autumn 2021 until the last game of the season just ended. The winner of the sextuple at Bayern Munich, Flick thus became the Catalan club's third German manager after Hennes Weisweiler and Udo Lattek.
Coincidentally, Lattek was the first coach that Hansi Flick played under at Bayern, who he joined from SV Sandhausen when he was just 20. A skilful midfielder who covered a lot of ground, he played over 100 games in the Bundesliga, helping the team to two league titles and into the final of the 1987 European Cup, which the Bavarians lost to FC Porto.
His playing career was a short one, for after moving to Köln, where he played 148 Bundesliga games from 1990 to 1992, a series of injuries forced him into early retirement from active duty.
