Vicenta Pubill

Vicenta Pubill

Vicenta Pubill (Olesa de Montserrat, Barcelona 1954) was an international midfielder with a tremendous touch who played for Barça Women for many years. Unfortunately her undoubted quality was only acknowledged outside of Spain

Pubill was just 17 years old when she heard on the radio that Peña Femenina Barcelonista were looking for players. She put herself forward and started to play straight away, going on to be blaugrana player from 1971 to 1983, with a brief hiatus during the 1980/81 season, when she played for Piacenza in Italy. Her midfield play shone during her stint over there, where she became known as the female Cruyff. She found the glory there that she couldn't achieve over here due to a lack of exposure.

She and some her teammates left Barça Femenino in 1983 to form Peña Barcelonista Barcilona, a powerful team that won the first Liga Nacional for women's football in the 1988/89 season.

Ultimately, Vicenta Pubill played football for 21 years, and even coached for a while. A very committed and hardworking midfielder, she remains fond of the games she played in the former Soviet Union during the 1989-90 season (with Aurora from Leningrad), having enjoyed her football there because she felt like just one of the players and could fully immerse herself in the experience.
