Bàsquet Girona 91-90 Barça: Defeat in Fontajau

Iroegbu's basket two seconds from time is enough to defeat the blaugranes who led by 10 with less than four minutes left

Joan Peñarroya's team went down to a last second defeat in Fontajau against Girona, losing 91-90 after leading by 10 points with less than four minutes to go in the game. A score from Iroegbu gave the home side victory with just two seconds remaining and the result leaves Barça with a 7-8 record with two games to go until the half way point of the league season.

25 points from Anderson and 15 from Punter were to no avail as the blaugranes now face Gran Canaria away and Bilbao at home, crucial games if Barça are to finish the first half of the season in the top eight to qualify for the Copa del Rey.

Strong opening from the home side

Girona began strongly both on defence and offence. Scoring 6 of 8 three point attempts, the home side netted a 28-20 advantage at the end of the first period in a packed Fontajau arena.

Barça came back at Girona in the second period with Parker bringing them to within three at 33-30. However, every time the blaugranes came close to levelling, Moncho Fernández's team found another gear. At half time Girona's advantage stood at seven points at 51-44.

Barça come to life

The third quarter saw the game turn on its head. Five unanswered points cut the deficit and by the 25th minute, Girona's lead was down to a point at 56-55. A three point play from Parker and a three pointer from Punter allowed Barça to get their noses in front at 61-56. Barça then accelerated at the end of the third quarter to outscore Girona 27-13 in the period and take a 71-64 lead into the final quarter.

Nerve shredding final

Despite a comeback from the home side, Barça seemed set for victory with Satoransky, Parker and Metu scoring key points to give Peñarroya's team a 10 points lead at 85-75 with less than four minutes to go. Girona dragged themselves back into the contest at 89-88 in front with just 37 seconds left.

Metu landed two free throws to see Barça back in the lead at 90-89 but Iroegbu's basket in the last few seconds saw Girona take a memorable win over their local rivals.
