A look back at Barça's opening games of the last 10 LaLiga seasons

This year FC Barcelona start with an awkward trip to Getafe, but how have their other Liga campaigns begun in the last decade?

LaLiga is back for Xavi Hernández and the squad. Sunday at 9.30pm CEST will see Barça play Getafe for the first matchday of the 2023/24 season at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez.

Current LaLiga champions Barça are targeting another win in the opening game of the season, something they achieved most of the time in recent years. The blaugranas have won the first LaLiga game of the season in 8 of the last 10 seasons.

Big win under coach Tata Martino

18 August 2013 saw Barça send a clear message on the first LaLiga matchday, with a big 7-0 win against Levante at the Spotify Camp Nou. Braces by Messi and Pedro, plus goals from Alexis, Dani Alves and Xavi Hernández left their opponents with no chance of a result.

Only wins under Luis Enrique

The Asturian coach won all three of his opening matches of the season. The 2014/15 season saw Barça begin the league campaign at home against Elche. Another brace from Messi, plus a goal by a young Munir gave the blaugranas the victory (3-0).

After four opening games in a row at the Spotify Camp Nou, Barça visited San Mamés on 23 August 2015. Luis Enrique's side edged a 0-1 win with Luis Suarez scoring the goal.

Luis Suárez again stood out for the first game of the 2016/17 league season, scoring a hat-trick against Real Betis, with Leo Messi adding a brace, plus Arda Turan netting one. Barça stormed to a 6-2 win against the green and whites at the Spotify Camp Nou.

Two wins and a defeat under Valverde

Barça again begin against Real Betis at home with Ernesto Valverde as coach. The blaugranas won 2-0 after an own goal by Tosca and a goal by Sergi Roberto.

Valverde started his second season with a LaLiga win at home too. This time Barça defeated Alavés 3-0 thanks to a brace by Messi and a goal by Philippe Coutinho.

The first and only defeat in an opening league match in the last decade came on 16 August 2019 away to Athletic Club at the San Mamés stadium. A goal by Aritz Aduriz at the death saw the Basque side take the first three points of the season.

Two from two with Koeman

With the Dutchman as coach, Barça scored a maximum six points from the two opening league matches of the season. The 2020/21 season saw a resounding 4-0 win against Villarreal, via a young Ansu Fati grabbing a brace, a Messi penalty and an own goal by Pau Torres.

Ronald Koeman's side again scored 4 goals in the opening match the following season, but this time conceded 2 against Real Sociedad. Barça beat the Basque side through a brace from Martin Braithwaite, a goal by both Piqué and Sergi Roberto.

Goalless draw under Xavi Hernández

Last season with Xavi Hernández as coach saw Barça draw 0-0 with Rayo Vallecano at the Spotify Camp Nou, but the blaugranas went on to win the league all the same.
