Stellar Gavi collects MVP prize

15 January 2023 is a date that Gavi is not going to be forgetting in a hurry. Not only did he win his first major trophy with FC Barcelona, but he was very much one of the prime reasons why it happened. One goal and two assists were deservedly recognised with the MVP award in the Spanish Super Cup Final.

Youngest ever goalscorer

Gavi's goal, the first of the game, came off a Robert Lewandowski pass following a brilliant move by the whole team. And at 18 years and 163 days he becomes the youngest ever Spanish Super Cup goalscorer. Curiously, the man he surpasses is none other than his manager Xavi, who had held the record since 1998.

Two assists

The Andalusian was quick to return the favour to Lewandowski. The roles were reversed when he lost his markers to break free down the left wing and slip in the most perfect of square balls into the danger zone. There was the Pole to score, and in doing so help make Gavi the youngest player to ever both score and give an assist in a Clásico. 

But Gavi wasn't done yet. Goal number three was also his making, with a pass to Pedri making him the first player since Johan Cruyff, way back in 1974, to score a goal and give two assists in a Clásico. More than enough reasons to earn him the MVP prize, and there can be no arguing with the decision when it was announced.

One thing's for sure. That won't be the last MVP award that Gavi wins. There are going to be plenty more where that came from... Watch this space!
