Lionel Messi's penalty kick against Real Sociedad was worth three points... and also a new record for the Argentinian. The No.10 now has 438 goals in league competition, one more than Cristiano Ronaldo, meaning that he regains top spot as the all-time top scorer in the five major European leagues.
LaLiga's MVP for February, Messi led the table until January 25, when Ronaldo overtook him with a goal against Napoli. Six weeks later, Messi leads the way again.
With his penalty, Messi has played a part in 25 goals against Real Sociedad in 24 games. He has scored 16 and provided nine assists against the Basques, whom he hadn't beaten with Imanol Alguacil as coach.
In fact, Messi is the player who has secured the most league points for his team (25) thanks to 31 goal actions (goals and assists) this season.
