March 22 marks exactly six months since the day Marc-André ter Stegen suffered the most serious injury of his entire career. It was at the Estadio de la Cerámica in Villarreal where the German goalkeeper jumped to reach a high ball, but slightly off balance due to contact with an opponent, he landed awkwardly and suffered a complete rupture of the patellar tendon in his right knee.
But the first captain is notably resilient, and he is working hard at the training ground to regain full fitness. After undergoing surgery the day after the injury, Ter Stegen began his rehabilitation under the watchful eye of the club's medical staff, who are closely monitoring the progress of a key figure both on the pitch and in the dressing room.
Ter Stegen may have been unable to contribute between the posts, but he has never neglected his duty as captain. He is always by his teammates’ side, sometimes in the spotlight, like when he lifted the Spanish Super Cup won in Saudi Arabia, or when he has gone on to the pitch to congratulate them after several crucial victories at the Estadi Olímpic. While all this goes on, he keeps working and recovering at the Ciutat Esportiva. His progress is steady, but he is also making sure he doesn't rush anything.
