It's the final round of matches in the Champions League's new-format group stage, and although FC Barcelona are already assured a top eight finish, their exact final position will still have a huge bearing on the rest of the competition. That's because matches in the knockout stage, rather than being drawn randomly, are decided depending on how teams placed in the League Stage. So the higher a team finishes, the theoretically easier their route. Let's take a closer look.
10.9% chance of finishing first
If Barça win, they will secure one of the top two sports regardless of results elsewhere. But to finish top they would also need Liverpool to lose at PSV Eindhoven. The Merseysiders have won every game so far and are three points clear, but they have a far weaker goal difference. The stats experts tell us that there's only a 10.9% chance of Barça finishing top, mainly because the Reds are unlikely to lose in the Netherlands.
Draw depends on Inter and Arsenal
If Barça draw, they would have no hope of winning the league and could drop out of the top two places. That would depend on how Arsenal and Inter get on in their games away to Girona and AS Monaco respectively. However, as Arsenal would need to win by four goals and Inter by nine, it looks like Barça's place in the top two would still be more than safe.
In case of defeat...
If Barça lose at home to Atalanta, then a top two berth would be in far greater peril. Both Arsenal and Inter would move above them with wins in their own games. Atlético Madrid and AC Milan would also enter the equation, although the chances of the 10 and 11 goal differences with respect to those sides make it extremely improbable that Barça could drop to any lower than fourth in the table.
Possible last 16 opponents
Once the games are over, Barça will already know which four teams they could potentially be meeting in the last sixteen. A top two finish means a match-up with a team that finished 15th, 16th, 17th or 18th, while third or fourth means playing a team that ended 13th, 14th, 19th or 20th. In whatever case, Barça will get the advantage of playing the second leg at home.
