Known to everyone as Quique Costas, the Galician defender was the epitome of an effective and consistent defender who always gave his all for the team out of the spotlight. His qualities included his excellent positioning, his toughness and his ability to keep the game simple.
He was a fixture in the league winning side of 1973/74 and towards the end of his career he was also part of the team that won the European Cup Winners Cup in Basel, Switzerland in 1979. Barça paid tribute to the defender alongside Toño de la Cruz on 1 September 1980 at Camp Nou.
Costas ended up spending 43 years in a row at Barça, 9 as a player and 34 as a coach until his retirement.
