Spain knocked out of World Cup by Russia on penalties
The shootout saw Iniesta and Piqué put away their spot kicks, but the hosts progressed to the quarter finals
Four FC Barcelona players waved goodbye to the World Cup on Sunday, as Spain were knocked out on penalties by Russia. The game ended 1-1, going to extra time and then the shootout, won 4-3 by the host nation.
Jordi Alba, Piqué and Sergio Busquets featured in the starting eleven, and Spain went ahead 12 minutes in thanks to an own goal by Ignashevich. Russia equalised from a Dyzuba penalty just before the break.
Andrés Iniesta was brought on 67 minutes in, but neither side would find the net again in regular time or extra time.
Iniesta and Piqué both put away their penalties in the shootout, but misses from Koke and Aspas meant that Russia went through to the quarter final stage.
