Gerard Piqué acknowledges ‘tough defeat’ against ‘great side’ Juventus
Gerard Piqué was magnanimous in defeat immediately after the final whistle of the 0-0 draw at Camp Nou that saw the blaugranes exit the Champions League at the quarter-final stage. “Juventus are a great side. Overall I think they have been the better team. I wish them the best and they have deserved to go through. We tried to play our way and create chances but little by little the mountain we had to climb got bigger and bigger and it was not to be,” admitted the Barça defender.
“I think it’s a tough defeat but the fans singing at the end needs to be remembered. I haven’t seen Camp Nou like this very often after a defeat. I am proud.”
“They are Italian, they know how to defend. They are specialists in that and they managed to play their football.”
“On Sunday we have another challenge. We will go to the Bernabéu to compete and win. It’s stadium that is good for us and even though we are not in the best of form, we will go out to win.”
“The fans got behind us until the last minute, like another player, we needed their support to turn the tie around. We thank them for their support and we battled until the end.”
“We created a lot of chances but nothing would go in, if it had, we would have been in the tie.”
“We leave disappointed. We have to be critical and look at the mistakes and approach the end of the season in the best possible fashion. We still have the league and the Copa del Rey and every game will be decisive.”
“We were not as effective in front of goal as usual and that cost us.”
“It’s a disappointment to be knocked out of the Champions League but winning the league relies on winning in the Bernabéu and that is our intention.”
