Olympiacos lose Athens derby to Panathinaikos

Barça's next Champions League rival lose Athens derby to Panathinaikos; Sevilla win and Real Madrid lose to Girona

Lemonis’ Olympiacos side weren’t able to secure a positive result in the Athens derby ahead of Barça’s visit to the Greek capital for the fourth Champions League fixture of the season. The 1-0 defeat was Olympiacos’ third of their domestic season and they have 14 points from nine matches.

They didn’t create any chances in the first half against Panathinaikos, but they managed to keep them at bay as well (0-0). The second half saw Olympiacos fall behind in the 56th minute through Lucas Villafanez following a rebound. Lemonis’ side only went close through Konstantinos Fortounis.

Juventus and Sporting win

Allegri’s side won their derby against Milan thanks to a Gonzalo Higuain brace. Higuain and Dybala led Juventus from the front and the opener came through a combination of the two which Higuain finished in the 23rd minute.

The Vecchia Signora doubled their lead with the Argentinian duo once again making a difference. Dybala let a ball run and Higuain smashed home to secure an important 2-0 victory which leaves them in second place on 28 points.

In the Portuguese league, Sporting are in a fight for top spot. Bast Dost won his team three points with a winner in the 89th minute against Rio Ave. The late goal kept the Portuguese side right in the fight for first place. They are on 26 points and in second place behind Porto.

La Liga latest…

Sevilla warmed up for their La Liga match against Barça with a 2-1 win over Leganés. Ben Yedder and Sarabia goals in each half were sandwiched between a strike by Szymanowski. Sevilla are now in fifth place on 19 points.

Simone Zaza and Rodrigo scored the goals as Valencia maintained their unbeaten La Liga start against Alavés. The Basque side got one back through Alexis but in the end Marcelino’s side held out and they are in second place.

Real Madrid are in third place, eight points adrift of the top. Zinedine Zidane's side suffered a shock defeat to Girona. The Catalan team came from behind to defeat the European champions 2-1 with quick-fire goals from Christian Stuani and Portu in the second half following Isco’s opener.

Atlético Madrid are fourth in the table following a 1-1 draw with Villareal. Correa gave Simeone’s side the lead but Bacca equalised late on. This leaves Atlético on 20 points, eight behind the blaugranas.
